Gum disease, also referred to as periodontitis or periodontal disease, starts with bacterial growth in the mouth, and if not properly treated, it can lead to tooth loss when the tissue surrounding the teeth is destroyed. Gum disease is caused by a sticky film of bacteria known as plaque that forms on the teeth. This disease involves an infection of the gums, and because it is typically painless, you might not even know that you have it.
Gum Disease Warning Signs

Periods of rapid progression are possible with periodontitis. Aggressive periodontitis is a destructive form of periodontal disease, and it occurs in patients who may be otherwise healthy. Common symptoms include rapid bone and tissue loss in some or all of the mouth.
Dental and medical professionals are concerned about the link between periodontal disease and systemic diseases. Wile a definitive connection has not been identified, some researchers believe that severe gum disease could be associated with other health conditions, including stroke or diabetes.
