Dental Sealants Portland, OR
You brush and floss like you are supposed to, but still notice that there is sometimes food caught in your back teeth.
Despite your best efforts, your dentist is starting to see a little extra attention to those back teeth becoming necessary.
One of the best ways to avoid this type of an issue is by putting a dental sealant on those back molars.
This protects them, and keeps food from doing as much damage, preventing a lot of tooth decay when paired with proper oral hygiene procedures.
At Dougherty Laybourn Menashe Dental, our Portland dentists can help you prevent tooth decay and damage by putting dental sealants on your teeth.
How Do Dental Sealants Work?
Wisdom teeth are more difficult to keep clean, simply because your jaw does not work on a hinge that opens up 180 degrees. If it did, you would be able to clean those teeth no problem! But since you can’t, we need to be able to cover those teeth with a little extra protection to keep them from experiencing tooth decay.
Our dentists at Dougherty Laybourn Menashe Dental can coat your back teeth with a dental sealant that is able to keep food out of the little crevices that cover the chewing portion of your molars. What this does is acts like a little bit of a shield. It lifts the food up a little higher off your teeth, giving your toothbrush and floss better chances of cleaning it off when you clean up after your meals.
The sealant that is placed on your back teeth fills in the little tiny holes in the teeth that are naturally there, and seals up the grooves of the tooth. This keeps your teeth solid, closing off any spots where food would try and hide or get stuck in.
How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?
Sealants work really well for quite some time, but they do not last forever. One should expect, with normal wear and tear, the sealants to last around five years and then they will have to be replaced.
About Dental Sealants
Dental sealants can help prevent tooth decay in a portion of your mouth that is difficult to reach, but they are not meant to be a substitute for normal hygiene practices, such as flossing every day and brushing at least twice a day.
You will still need to go in and have your dentist check your teeth every six months as well, since that is going to be able to help you prevent a vast majority of the issues in your mouth.
