What this does is acts like a little bit of a shield. It lifts the food up a little higher off your teeth, giving your toothbrush and floss better chances of cleaning it off when you clean up after your meals.
The sealant that is placed on your back teeth fills in the little tiny holes in the teeth that are naturally there, and seals up the grooves of the tooth. This keeps your teeth solid, closing off any spots where food would try and hide or get stuck in.
How Long Do Dental Sealants Last?
Sealants work really well for quite some time, but they do not last forever. One should expect, with normal wear and tear, the sealants to last around five years and then they will have to be replaced.

Dental sealants can help prevent tooth decay in a portion of your mouth that is difficult to reach, but they are not meant to be a substitute for normal hygiene practices, such as flossing every day and brushing at least twice a day.
